Mares vs. Moreno, Abril vs. Bogere, Russell Jr. vs. TBA possible for October 13th
By Dan Ambrose: RingTV is reporting that an interesting Showtime televised card is in the works for October 13th headlined by a fight between WBC super bantamweight champion Abner Mares and WBA World bantamweight champion Anselmo Moreno in a Golden Boy Promotions fight card.
In addition to the Mares-Moreno fight, unbeaten featherweight contender Gary Russell Jr. will be on the card against an opponent still to be determined.
In lightweight action, contender Richard Abril will be fighting unbeaten knockout artist Sharif Bogere with the World Boxing Organization lightweight title possibly being on the line for the fight.
It’s a decent card. I like the Mares-Moreno fight a lot. I’m less excited about the Abril vs. Bogere fight because Abril usually comes to box and he’ll likely make the slugger Bogere look really bad in this one. I think Bogere is a decent fighter, but he’s a big step down from quality fighters like Adrien Broner in my view.
Mares will get a real test against the southpaw Moreno, and it should be interesting to see if Mares can get past that test. He’s beaten guys like Vic Darchinyan and Joseph Agbeko, but those were close fights. Moreno could have enough tools to out-box Mares and take his WBC title if he can get him swinging for the fences.
Russell Jr. is one of the best fighters in the featherweight division. It’s still too early to tell if he’s the real deal or just another overly hyped fighter that won’t pan out. He looks decent to me except for the fact that he plods when he moves around the ring and he doesn’t moves very much.
