Image: Golden Boy badly wants to get Deontay Wilder some roundsBy Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten heavyweight talent Deontay Wilder (24-0, 24 KO’s) showed last night that he’s the future of the heavyweight division in blowing out veteran Kertson Manswell (22-6, 17 KO’s) in a three knockdown 1st round knockout performance at the Exposition Hall, in Mobile, Alabama.

For the 26-year-old Wilder, this was his 15th 1st round knockout of his 24 consecutive KOs on his resume. That shows you the kind of power that Wilder possesses as a heavyweight. While it’s good that Wilder is blowing through everyone so quick because it catches the attention of boxing fans, it’s also a negative because he’s not getting in enough rounds to learn things and improve his conditioning. He’s having to do all that in training camp but not in the ring.

Golden Boy Promotions, Wilder’s promoters, badly want to get him some rounds so that he can keep getting better. Eric Gomez, the matchmaker for Golden Boy, told RingTV “Deontay’s still learning but he’s got that God-given talent and he’s got all the tools. He’s got that gift and that ability. But we’ve got to get him guys who can give rounds. That’s what he needs now.”

Finding someone that can give a huge puncher like Wilder rounds is easier said than done. He hits too hard and it’s going to take a special kind of heavyweight to give Wilder any kind of fight. Perhaps the only real heavyweight that can give Wilder rounds is one that runs for 12 rounds and just focuses on surviving. David Haye would be perfect for the job, although it’s not an option for Wilder to fight him because Haye would never fight an upcoming heavyweight like Wilder. But there are other runners out there that could give Wilder some rounds.

I don’t see a heavyweight in existence that can take Wilder’s power without getting knocked out. He’s too huge of puncher, too quick and way too big for anyone to stay in there with him for long. Wilder has that Tyson-like power and that makes it impossible for anyone to take his shots. If you remember Tyson in the early part of his career, he was knocking out everyone in the first couple of rounds. Wilder is doing the exact same things.

Last night, Wilder connected with a tremendous right hand in the 1st round that badly hurt Manswell. I don’t think he ever recovered from that shot, because he was immediately knocked down three straight times. The punch was a downward sledgehammer that Wilder really put his whole body into and I was surprised that Manswell was still standing after he got hit with it. However, Wilder threw it in a combination with a left hand that followed and that’s the shot that knocked Manswell down. The left was nothing compared to the right that preceded it. The left merely finished what the right hand had started.
