Image: Can Khan urgently make changes?By Saroosh Asghar: After a good run since joining hands with trainer Freddie Roach, the consistency has dried out in the last two fights. You can give former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s) the benefit of doubt in the Peterson fight, However flaws were evident and need to be addressed.

What has happened cannot be changed, but can be prevented form happening again. The obvious change is to go back to basics and work on different defensive techniques, which include how to clinch when hurt and kill the clock. They need to simulate the process and practice on what to do when that happens so it become familiar territory. Along with defence fighting in the pocket is an area which was exploited by Lamont Peterson. So the game plan to beat Amir Khan has been exposed and as he’s moving up and fighting the best this is something that will effect him from time to time and rebuilding himself will be very difficult as he gets older.

Look at Floyd Mayweather jr he till this date he still states that his health is more important, so therefore very seldom gets hit. That’s the approach Amir needs to take if he is to sustain in his ability to be considered one of the best.

The fight with Floyd will only happen if he wants to fight in the Uk, Otherwise Khan need to build himself to be the best and earn the big pay-days without fighting Floyd. Emanuel steward is a good next step however Roger/Floyd snr are the best options for the long run, more importantly Roger as he has the facilities and the sparing partners to take Amir to the next level.

Khans strength and conditioning coach is considered one of the best in the Uk and across the pond but I feel Ruben needs to build Amir’s legs to the point that 60% of Amir’s strength is in his leg’s, look at Manny Pacquiao, his upper body is small compared to his lower body. Also lifting neck weights will give Amir the confidence during fights but more importantly it will help him take a good shot and recover effectively. All the other impressive things Ruben does with Khan will complement him along the way. Amir was beating his best times from when he was with Alex Ariza therefore speaks volumes.

I feel if he signs with Al Haymon and TMT Promotions this will boost his appeal to the American crowd as 50cent has plans to advertise the fighters through non boxing mediums such as MTV. This will raise his profile even more and therefore generate more dollars. Amir gets good pay days for fighting the best in his division however Al Haymon will get him big pay days regardless who he fights as making a legacy will come in time.
