By Babatis Banda: It may have been just a statement to some, but it has come out as a proven fact. Floyd Mayweather Jr is the man to beat. All manner of boxers, from nonentities to some B-level boxers are blabbering his name. He is the ultimate test for anybody and so, the face of boxing.
He draws millions of dollars each time he fights. He is an economic factor in any economy. Consider what his fights do for the economies of the cities he fights in. There is proof to this fact, a whole prison sentence had to wait for him to fight. I mean, the long arm of the law was shortened momentarily, to accommodate this splendid fighting machine.
For over sixteen years now, this man has dominated this sport. Of cause, over this course of time, one or two boxers did steal some lime light, but that’s all it is, some momentarily stolen limelight. It is just amazing how somebody can remain unbeaten at this level of competition. This is at the very top of the sport, there is no luxury here, you win belts from champions and you beat champions to be in such a position. If not, then why is it that Floyd draws the kind of following, money and PPV? There are some unbeaten names, but they are not anywhere near the level of Floyd. That explains why they are not even a fraction of what Mayweather has achieved, or does for the sport in terms of popularity, money and PPV sales. They are still climbing the ladder that Floyd is sitting on.
The more amazing fact is that Floyd represents a sport. He is not famous for representing a country, which draws an automatic fanatic following because of nationalistic views. His success is devoid of politics or any nationalistic ideology. He is the pride of the sport and only his amazing skills have put him there. Floyd Mayweather’s last fight with Cotto was a feat. He went up to meet Cotto at 154. On the fight night, Floyd was actually 149, to Cotto’s 154 and he put up a splendid fight. It was the first time in a long time to see Floyd bleed from the nose, the result of Cotto’s sharp and powerful jab and this excited some people for obvious reasons. The result was the same, a clear win for Floyd.
The roads might be long, winding, short, wide or narrow, they all lead to Mayweather Jnr. Floyd Mayweather is the only remaining sure test and all want a piece of him for glory even in their losing, and glory in their pocket too. Some still remain at a cross-road, but they will finally have to pass through the great litmus test, Floyd Mayweather Jnr.
