Image: Dawson-Ward, DeMarco-Molina: Two good fights on HBO on September 8thBy Allan Fox: It’s scary how bad last night’s mismatches were on HBO with Adrien Broner easily beating Vincente Escobedo, Keith Thurman destroying an overmatched Orlando Lora and Omar Figueroa dominating an outclassed Dominic Salcido. The card was either poorly thought out or planned to make the winners look better than they are. Whatever the case, they bad fights for boxing fans to watch. However, on September 8th, HBO has a good chance of redeeming themselves by televising Chad Dawson vs. Andre Ward and Antonio DeMarco vs. John Molina at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.

The Ward-Dawson fight looks to be a very good fight because these guys are considered to be the best fighters in their divisions. Dawson, the WBC light heavyweight champ, is moving down to 168 to fight Ward for his WBA/WBC super middleweight titles in his own home arena. There will likely be at least 10,000 fans that will be showing up to watch the Ward-Dawson fight with most of them being fans of Ward. Dawson doesn’t seem to care that he’s moving down in weight and will be the visiting fighters. He’s been dominating for so long at light heavyweight that he needs a real challenge after all this time and doesn’t care that he’ll be the underdog for the fight.

Ward is the better inside fighter and he could be the stronger guy if Dawson is weakened from having to melt down to the 168 pound limit. However, Dawson could have an advantage if he’s able to rehydrate back up to a higher weight. If he can come into the fight weighing 190, he’ll have an advantage over Ward.

The 26-year-old DeMarco will be making his 2nd defense of his World Boxing Council lightweight title and he’s got a tough opponent in front of him with the 29-year-old Molina. What makes Molina so tough is that he’s got a lot of height at 5’10 1/2″ and he nullifies most of the 5’11” DeMarco’s height and reach. DeMarco is used to be the much taller guy but in this fight he’s not going to have much an advantage like he usually has.
