Broner: If DeMarco doesn’t fight me next, I’ll take Ricky Burns

Image: Broner: If DeMarco doesn't fight me next, I'll take Ricky BurnsBy Scott Gilfoid: Former WBO super featherweight champion Adrien Broner (24-0, 20 KO’s) says he wants to take on WBC lightweight champion Antonio DeMarco (27-2-1, 20 KO’s) in his first fight at lightweight later on this year. However, if DeMarco won’t fight him, then Broner wants to face WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns next.

I wouldn’t hold my breath if I was Broner waiting on Burns to fight him. I don’t see that happening in a million years. If Burns wouldn’t fight Broner when the two were at super featherweight then what makes Broner think anything would be different now that he’s moving up to the lightweight division?

The World Boxing Organization is doing Broner a huge favor by making him the #1 WBO lightweight contender, and that move is going to put a ton of pressure on Burns to either take the fight or come up with ways to avoid it, such as trying to get multiple optional defenses, get permission from the WBO to bypass Broner or look for unification bouts with other lightweight champions. But I don’t see Burns fighting Broner in 2013 unless the WBO is poised to strip him of his title.

Broner said to RingTV “I would like to fight DeMarco first…If DeMarco don’t fight me, then, yeah, it would be Ricky Burns if he would fight me. We’ll have to see what happens.”

I can already see it. Broner doesn’t get the fight with DeMarco, and also gets bypassed/ignored by Burns as well. If Broner wants a shot at one of the titles at lightweight, he’s probably going to have to fight IBF champion Miguel Vazquez, who might be the best of the bunch because of his defensive style of fighting.

Broner looked really good in defeating Vincente Escobedo (26-4, 15 KO’s) by a 5th round TKO last Saturday night on HBO. Broner busted Escobedo up in the 5th and then went for the kill in the 6th.
