Image: Saul Alvarez vs. Paul Williams on PPV on 9/15: Is this worth paying for?By Chris Williams: I was shocked to learn that the September 15th clash between WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez and Paul Williams will be on pay-per-view. It’s unclear how much they’re going to be asking fans to pay to see the Alvarez-Williams fight, but my guess is nothing less than $40, and it could be more than that.

I knew Alvarez’s promoters Golden Boy Promotions was looking to make Alvarez into a PPV attraction, but I just didn’t think that time had arrived yet.

I think the American public has only see Alvarez fight a small handful of times in mismatches against a 40-year-old Shane Mosley, Kermit Cintron, Ryan Rhodes, zAlfonso Gomez and Matthew Hatton.

Paul Williams was pretty well dominated by Erislandy Lara last year in one of the worst scored fights you’ll ever see. Why should boxing fans have to pay to see him fight off of that recent performance? That’s like rewarding the guy for getting a gift decision.

No, I don’t see this as a PPV fight. Maybe if Alvarez was facing Sergio Martinez, Miguel Cotto or Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., I could see it as a PPV fight. But I don’t see Alvarez against a Golden Boy picked Williams as being PPV worthy. I think Golden Boy needs to drop the asking price to say $1.99, and maybe they’ve got something here. But why pay to see the inexperienced Alvarez fight a guy that was knocked cold in the 2nd round by Sergio Martinez and dominated by Lara? It’s not worth it to me.

Right now, Richard Schaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy, is looking to add Jhonny Gonzalez vs. Daniel Ponce De Leon as the co-feature, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. While I do like that fight somewhat, I’m not thrilled at paying to see either of those guys fight. I already saw Ponce De Leon stopped by Juan Manuel Lopez and beaten recently by Adrien Broner. I’m not interested in paying to see him lose again. By the same token, I’ve seen Gonzalez knocked out by Toshiaki Nishioka, Gerry Penalosa and Israel Vazquez. I don’t want to pay to see him fight now or ever. Granted, Gonzalez has a nice 12 fight win streak going, but he hasn’t fought anyone really good. Once he faces a good opponent, I see Gonzalez getting knocked out just like before. In other words, I don’t classify him as someone I want to pay $40 to $60 to see fight.
