Image: Mayweather: I want Cotto to press the attack earlyBy Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr. says he wants to entertain the boxing fans this Saturday night when he challenges for the WBA junior middleweight title against champion Miguel Cotto at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mayweather wants to put on a show for the fans and is hoping that Cotto will go toe-to-toe with him.

Mayweather said “I want Cotto to be comfortable. I want him to press the attack early so we can give the fans a good show.”

Just by saying that, Mayweather might not get what he’s asking for because Cotto has been burned badly in fights where he came out aggressive and found himself taking a beating against Antonio Margarito and Manny Pacquiao. Since those fights, Cotto has become more of a boxer/puncher who moves a lot around the ring to avoid punishment when things aren’t going his way.

That was the case in Cotto’s fight against Ricardo Mayorga last year in March where Cotto discovered early on that he didn’t have the power or chin to stand up to Mayorga in a one-on-one battle. Cotto, to his credit, made badly needed adjustments by staying on the move and boxing Mayorga until blitzing the tired Mayorga in the 12th round to get a technical knockout. If Cotto fights the same way against Mayweather, he might have a small chance at winning if he make it to the 12th round and not get cut up and stopped.

It’s a big if because Mayweather is so good and he takes advantage of every opportunity that presents itself to him to land his counter punches. If Cotto attacks Mayweather like he wants him to, then it’s going to make it a lot easier for Mayweather to get Cotto out of there in a big hurry because Cotto will likely go to pieces when he starts getting hit a lot.
