Why is the WBO sanctioning Broner-Sykes bout?

Image: Why is the WBO sanctioning Broner-Sykes bout?By Scott Gilfoid: Why is the World Boxing Organization sanctioning the bout between WBO super featherweight champion Adrien Broner (23-0, 19 KO’s) and feather-fisted 2nd tier fodder opponent Gary Sykes (20-2, 5 KO’s) on May 19th at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Sadly, the Broner vs. Sykes mismatch is the co-main event on the undercard of the Amir Khan vs. Lamont Peterson rematch. I think that’s a good fight as long as Khan doesn’t go foul happy like he did last time they fought last December. But I think pairing that fight with the mismatch between C fighter Sykes and an A+ guy like Broner is a huge mismatch.

It’s not good to have mismatches like that in boxing, and that’s why sanctioning bodies are supposed to be the watch dog to prevent champions being able to have their promoters hand pick weak opposition so that they can be ritually slaughtered for the boxing public.

Sykes was already exposed at the 2nd tier level, so how in the world is he being given a chance to get wiped out by Broner at the 1st tier? Golden Boy Promotions obviously want a British to try and get the interest up for the Brits to care about seeing Broner fight on the undercard, but come on, can’t Golden Boy at least find a fringe level 1st tier guy for Broner to toss around the ring like a killer whale toying with some of it’s prey. This just looks like Golden Boy is doing it on the cheap by choosing Sykes rather than getting a Brit with decent skills like Kevin Mitchell to get obliterated.
