Should boxers self promotion be banned?

By Gerardo Granados: Professional boxing isn’t perfect and perhaps it will never be perfect, but doing simple things to regulate this green industry could lead to improve the quality of fights and benefit the boxing fans around the world.

I’ll ask the reader, what happens when a fighter promotes his own fights? You cannot argue it will bring suspicion when the score cards aren’t what the majority of fans saw, when a fighter promoter face an opponent with the sole intention to build up the new comer it could be considered as a fraud; he will pick his rivals and will demand most of the purse earnings. And mostly he could avoid the dangerous contenders due his cash cow status.
Many fighters’ promoters have done it in the past and in the present too. There is no need to make a list because it might take too long.

It is good that fighters get to earn a big purse because their professional career is short, even more because they are the ones who get hit and injured. But what happens when the best fights are not made because self promoter fighters won’t allow it to happen because of their big egos and voracious ambition. On times if a fight has the potential to be a very lucrative business it won’t be enough to make both parties agree on the fight contract terms.

On the other corner boxing fans get to see hype fighters engage against tailor made opponents but are deprived of the great match ups possible. The boxing organizations have authority to do almost everything, boxing commissions and promoters have the power to do it too but on times the boxer –promoter are above of them even above the boxing fans.

Is it necessary to ban the fighters self promoters to avoid any suspicion of wrongful conduct or should they be allowed to continue. Could it be possible to regulate the self promotion so that in case that when involved in a controversial fight decision to be ordered a mandatory immediate rematch , or to demand that both fighters to be top ten ranked if the bout is for the world title.

A friend of mine believes fighters should be allowed to self promote their own fights and that they should not be limited. I personally believe that they should be allowed but I also believe they should be regulated to avoid any controversial ruling. What does the reader think?
