Image: Mayweather needs to stop being so nice to CottoBy Dan Ambrose: Floyd Mayweather Jr. is really blowing it by playing nice guy with WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto. I don’t know what’s gotten into Mayweather, but whatever it is, he needs to snap out of it and start telling Cotto a thing of to. There’s no room for mercy in boxing. Mayweather needs to show him the fangs by ripping into Cotto, and not letting him off the hook.

All I can think of is Mayweather feels bad for Cotto because of his first fight against Antonio Margarito, a fight where some boxing fans think that Margarito may have fought with loaded gloves. Mayweather also could feel bad for Cotto because of his defeat against Manny Pacquiao in 2009 when Cotto had to fight at a catchweight because Pacquiao’s team wanted it.

The catchweight left Cotto weakened, and not the same fighter he was without having to drain himself. Things can happen in boxing, and that’s just how things can go sometime, but that doesn’t mean that Mayweather should be taking it easy on Cotto. The guy isn’t fragile. Cotto won’t break if Mayweather starts firing him up with trash talking in their 24/7 series. Indeed, Cotto’s seen it before and is well versed at receiving insults and firing back to a certain extent with his own. Cotto doesn’t have good enough skills to compete in a one on one fight with Mayweather in the trash talking department, but that shouldn’t deter Mayweather. He’s got a job to do and he has to forget about Cotto’s feelings because that’s not important. The important thing that Mayweather sells the fight by talking trash and letting both barrels go against Cotto. Mayweather can’t slip up now and start being nice because he’s going to blow it if he starts showing mercy to the opposition. Mayweather has to attack, attack and attack both verbally and physically. That’ll earn the respect from fans.
