Image: Mayweather: I'm going for the kill against CottoBy Dan Ambrose: Floyd Mayweather Jr. means business for his May 5th fight against WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto. Mayweather wants Cotto’s scalp and his World Boxing Council 154 pound title to add to his growing collection of title belts he’s won over the years.

I almost feel sorry for Cotto, because he’s probably going to get beaten black and blue by the time this fight is ended.

Mayweather said this as quoted by Examiner.com writer Igor Frank: “This fight won’t go the distance. So I know he [Cotto] is coming in for the kill and I am coming in for the kill.”

Above all, Mayweather wants to put in a great performance for the fans and to make sure the boxing fans who pay to see him fight on HBO pay-per-view for $59.95 and the ones that have paid to see him fight live at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, will get their monies worth on May 5th.

Cotto is really up against it here, because he’s not had a hard fight in three years. His ex-promoter decided to look for beatable guys instead of matching Cotto against the young lions in the 154 pound division like James Kirkland, Erislandy Lara and Vanes Martirosyan.

Maybe Cotto could beat some or all of those fighters, but we’ll never know because his former promoter Arum decided not to match Cotto against them for some reason. What this all means of course is that Cotto is going to be going into the fight with a long dry spell between quality opposition and that could hurt him in a big way against a class fighter like Mayweather.

This fight comes down to Mayweather’s speed and accurate punching to Cotto’s power and pressure. Cotto has a big power advantage, but what good is it if he’s unable to land his shots with any consistency?
