Fury’s admission of severe weight gain makes me question his longevity in the sport

Image: Fury's admission of severe weight gain makes me question his longevity in the sportBy Marcus Sales: Tyson Fury (17-0, 12KO’s) recently admitted that during the Christmas period he piled on an astonishing seventy pounds. More astonishingly is that he lost the weight in just two months in order to prepare for his clash with Martin Rogan (14-2, 7KO’s) which takes place this Saturday night.

Throughout the last eighteen months there has been an incredible amount of hype surrounding Fury. Is it simply that he bears the name of the former Undisputed Heavyweight Champion or is it due to his talent? I think the name has undoubtedly helped. After all, it is almost the perfect name for a heavyweight fighter. Fury has however, had some notable victories, none more so than against Dereck Chisora, who forgetting his antics outside of the ring in Germany, did put up a valiant effort inside the ring. His style has always been rather clumsy though. He doesn’t possess any ‘snap’ in his shots and his chin is undoubtedly shaky, as Nicolai Firtha and Neven Pajkic will testify. Yes, Fury went on to win those fights but for a man supposedly chasing the Klitchsko’s he should never have had to deal with such issues.

I say supposedly chasing the Klitchsko’s because Fury’s recent actions have left me bemused. After winning the British and Commonwealth Titles he states that he wishes to defend the belts 10 times, hyperbole I’m sure but my point is the same. Then a certain David Price becomes his mandatory challenger, a man who can truly test Fury’s credentials and he suddenly vacates the belt to chase his World Title dream. Ok…so a top ten ranked challenger then. Eddie Chambers maybe? No…Martin Rogan. No disrespect to Martin Rogan who is a warrior in domestic level boxing but we need to see Fury facing better opposition. He says that with the Rogan fight he will prove he is ready for the Klitchsko’s. Who is he kidding? Even a dominant display against Rogan will tell us nothing about Fury’s World Title credentials.

With his recent decisions, and his admission of severe weight gain, I really do question how far Fury can go in this sport. For me, he lacks the technique needed to succeed at the World level and he doesn’t seem mentally prepared for it either. I hope I am wrong, because any fighter who laces the gloves deserves respect, I just feel that the Tyson Fury train will come to a stop sooner rather than latter.
