Broner, 22, will be making his second defense of his World Boxing Organization title against an opponent that has yet to be determined.

Broner’s promoters at Golden Boy Promotions are looking for suitable opponents that boxing fans actually care about seeing. The name that writer Dan Rafael from ESPN is mentioning is 5’2″ Monty Meza Clay (32-3, 21 KO’s). It’s unclear if he’ll be the one that gets the pick. He’s not ranked in the top 15 by the WBO, although doesn’t mean anything. He still could get picked. However, it really should be someone a tad bit better so that Broner can at least get a fight and doesn’t end up looking like a bully beating up someone five inches shorter than him.

Golden Boy isn’t likely to take any chances with Broner by matching him tough against someone that could possibly pull off an upset. Broner looks to be one of the best fighters in the division if not the best. It’s hard to imagine Broner losing to any of the super featherweights right now. However, Golden Boy still likely won’t match him tough for his next fight. Expect someone ranked lower than the 10 spot for Broner’s optional title defense.

In his last four fights, Broner has beaten Daniel Ponce De Leon, Jason Litzau, Vicente Martin Rodriguez and Eloy Perez. The De Leon fight was close, but the rest of them were mismatches with Broner easily winning by knockout.

If Broner can keep winning, pretty soon he won’t be just fighting on undercards anymore. He’ll main event. That time could come very soon, but Broner needs to be matched against quality fighters that have recognizable names. Golden Boy won’t help Broner if they match him against guys that have no chance before the fight has even started.
