Image: Alvarado-Herrera a better fight than Marquez-Fedchenko and Rios-AbrilBy Dan Ambrose: This Saturday night there will be two interesting fights and one good fight on HBO pay-per-view with unbeaten light welterweight Mike Alvarado (32-0, 23 KO’s) facing Mauricio Herrera in the one good fight on the PPV card, and former WBA World lightweight champion Brandon Rios vs. Richard Abril, and Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Sergiy Fedchenko being the two bad fights.

In saying bad fights, I’m talking about mismatches. In other words, two non-competitive fights due to Rios and Marquez being so much better than their opponents.

Alvarado has been largely forgotten in the light welterweight division up until recently when he stopped former Amir Khan conqueror Breidis Prescott. Boxing fans now know who Alvarado is and they know the guy is for real. He’s going to bring it on Saturday and he could be the fighter that saves the card, because the two fights between Rios and Abril and Marquez and Fedchenko are likely going to be real stinkers due to the one-sided nature of the two. I’m not against mismatches, but I am when they involve a PPV fight with a price tag of $44.95. That’s a lot of money for a stinker of a card.

Herrera has a good chin and defense power. If he can stand up to Alvarado’s big shots, he could out-box him the same way that Prescott was doing up until getting knocked out by him. Herrera doesn’t have much size or power, so he’s going to have to do it with work rate and speed. That means that Herrera is going to have to take a lot of heavy shots from Alvarado. He must all costs avoid leaning forward, fighting Alvarado in close or trying to clinch with him. Alvarado eats up fighters in close with his big uppercuts, so it is imperative that Herrera stay on the outside as much as possible not to give Alvarado a target.
