Image: Warren hoping he can make Burns vs. Mitchell fight for the summerBy William Mackay: Promoter Frank Warren is hoping he can get #1 WBO lightweight contender Kevin Mitchell (33-1, 24 KO’s) for the next opponent for WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (34-2, 9 KO’s) in an fight that could take place in the summer in July. However, Warren isn’t sure if he can make the fight according to the BBC.

Warren told the BBC.co.uk “I can’t say who it is going to be against yet but it will probably in July. Kevin Mitchell is an opponent we are looking at and, providing he is sensible, maybe we could make that fight…he thinks he should be getting paid much more than Ricky. It’s a struggle to make that one.”

It’s hard to imagine why Mitchell, 27, would want more money or even as much money as Burns, since Mitchell hasn’t won a world title yet and failed in his attempt to capture the WBO lightweight interim title in 2010 against Michael Katsidis when Mitchell was blown out in a 3rd round TKO defeat. Mitchell has fought only twice since then, beating John Murray and Felix Lora.

Murray is technically a contender but there’s better fighters than him in the lightweight division and Mitchell really is still unproven as a fighter. Burns also is still a big question mark, as he’s had it pretty easy at lightweight against less than dangerous opposition.

A fight between Mitchell and Burns is one of those types of bouts where either guy could win. If Mitchell can deal with Burns’s constant holding, he’ll likely beat him. However, that won’t be easy because Burns is quick to grab after he gets his shots off and he’s good at pushing away shorter opponents.
