Image: Glazkov stops OrlovBy Jim Dower: Undefeated heavyweight prospect and former 2008 super heavyweight Olympian from Ukraine Vyacheslav Glazkov (11-0, 8 KO’s) registered his eighth knockout with a 5th round stoppage of 6’9″ 300+ Evegeny Orlov on Friday night at the Circus, in Krasnodar, Russia. Glazkov, 27, hurt the rounded Orlov with a right to the body in the 5th round that caused Orlov to wince and briefly turn his back in pain. Although he continued to fight for the remaining seconds of the round, you could see that he had possibly suffered a rib injury from the right hand shot.

Listed at 6’9″, Orlov looked more like 6’7″ and seemed giant compared to the 6’3″ 220+ Glazkov. The size differential allowed Orlov to control the 1st round just by holding his long left out in front of him to jab to keep the smaller Glazkov on the outside. There wasn’t much Glazkov could do in the first round, because he simply couldn’t hit Orlov unless he leaped off his feet to throw wild left hooks. Glazkov just looked too tiny in there against Orlov and you can only imagine what would have to Glazkov if he had been facing one of the Klitshko brothers or another big heavyweight that actually threw punches instead of just holding his left out in front of him like the journeyman Orlov did.

In the 2nd round, Glazkov began to find success with his jab, leaping left hooks and right hands to the body. Orlov was still connecting with short jabs with his long outstretched left hand. Glazkov could do nothing to stop them due to Orlov’s long reach. It was just lucky for Glazkov that Orlov’s jabs didn’t have much power or anything coming behind them like straight right hands.

By the 3rd round, Orlov, who looked to be carrying around at least 30 pounds of excess baggage around his midsection, began to tire out and not throwing as many jabs at that point. With not much coming back, Glazkov was able to hit Orlov more and more with left hooks, hard jabs and occasional right hands to the head and midsection. Glazkov had a lot of opportunities to throw combinations when he came in close for clinches, but held off and allowed Orlov to clinch. It could be that Glazkov doesn’t have an inside game and is still fighting in the amateur mode.

The 4th and 5th rounds were all Glazkov with him jabbing and landing more and more lefts to the head. In the 5th round, Glazkov landed a couple of rare right hands to the head. Late in the round, Glazkov hit Orlov with a hard right to the body that caused Orlov to wince in pain and turn his back on Glazkov as if he had been hit low. He hadn’t, though. The shot landed to the ribcage and it hurt him badly. However, Orlov made it through the remaining seconds of the round without any problems. After the round ended, Orlov paced back and forth looking as if he was still in pain. The fight was then halted.

Overall, a good performance from Glazkov in beating a bigger fighter without any offensive tools. But with that said. Glazkov doesn’t have the size or the offensive tools that other younger heavyweights have in the division such as Denis Boytsov, Robert Helenius, David Price, Alexander Dimitrenko and Tyson Fury. Glazkov would be better off trying to take some weight off and moving down to cruiserweight because he’ll have a lot of problems at heavyweight once he makes it to the top tier.
