This isn’t the fight that Stevenson wanted, as he was hoping to take on former two time title challenger Librado Andrade. However, Andrade reportedly past on the idea of fighting Stevenson for whatever reason.

Gonzalez, 32, fought for a world title in June 2007, losing by a 12 round unanimous decision to WBA World middleweight champion Felix Sturm in a one-sided loss. Gonzalez doesn’t have anything really special about him to warrant him being ranked at #3 WBC above Stevenson #13 WBC, Piotr Wilcwzewski #14, Edwin Rodriguez #5, George Groves #6, James DeGale #8, Tommy Oosthuizen #9, and Renan St. Juste #10. It’s just another one of those weird rankings that the WBC sometimes comes up with because as far as I can tell, Gonzalez belongs around the middle of the pack in the 2nd tier, not at #3 by the WBC. But it’s good for Stevenson because he can another easy win to help pump up his rankings.

At 34, Stevenson really has to speed up his career in a big way if he wants to pressure the champions in to giving him a s title shot. Stevenson’s career was going well until he was stopped in the 2nd round by journeyman puncher Darnell Boone in June 2010. Although Stevenson has won his last four fights since then, the wins have come against beatable 2nd tier opposition. Stevenson has good power but his chin is questionable and he’s going to have huge problems when he faces guys at super middleweight that can take his power such as Andre Ward, Carl Froch and Lucian Bute and answer back with power shots of their own. Stevenson is a puncher, not a boxer and he’s going to be over his head once he fights those guys.

Also on the card will be welterweight contender Antonin Decarie vs. TBA and light heavyweight Eleider Alvarez vs. TBA.
