By Dan Ambrose: Former two division world champion Tomasz Adamek (45-2, 28 KO’s) badly bruised his left hand in his 10 round unanimous decision victory over 2nd tier heavyweight Nagy Aguilera (17-7, 12 KO’s) last Saturday night at the Aviator Sports Complex in Brooklyn, New York. Adamek said he landed a shot with his left early in the fight that immediately caused him a lot of pain.
Adamek was still able to dominate Aguilera but he wasn’t able to put him down and hurt him after having him in a bit of trouble in the 3rd round.
According to Dan Rafael, the 35-year-old suffered no broken bones in his injured left hand and he should be good to go for his next fight on June 16th against a still to be determined opponent. Hopefully, Adamek will start facing better opposition because the hallmark of his time as heavyweight has been him facing 2nd and 3rd tier heavyweights. The only good heavyweights that Adamek has faced in the past three years were Chris Arreola and Vitali Klitschko. Adamek beat Arreola in April 2010 after a badly out of shape looking Arreola injured his left hand early in the fight and was forced to pretty much use only his right hand for the rest of the way.
Even with Arreola only using his right hand, he was able to stagger Adamek on several occasions in the fight. Adamek challenged WBC heavyweight champion Vital Klitschko for the title last September and was easily beaten in a 10th round TKO loss. Adamek was never competitive in that fight and spent most of the time running around the ring in wide circles eating jabs and right hands. It looked almost comical due to Adamek’s lack of size and his fighting approach.
It would be very surprising if Adamek fights a 1st tier heavyweight for his June 16th bout because that would break from the norm. He’s been facing guys like Kevin McBride, Vinny Maddalone and Michael Grant. It’s likely that Adamek’s next opponent will be someone along those lines.
