Image: Huck is going to have to show technical skills to beat PovetkinBy Jason Kim: WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck (34-1, 25 KO’s) steps up in weight on February 25th to challenge World Boxing Association (WBA) heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin (23-0, 16 KO’s) in a 12 round bout at the Porsche-Arena, in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

Huck, 27, wants to capture Povetkin’s title so that he can get a big money fight against one or both of the Klitschko brothers in 2012 or 2013. The problem that Huck has is he’s not much of a technical fighter and usually gets past his opposition on brute power alone.

At cruiserweight, Huck is able to use his power to crush the mediocre opposition that permeates the division from top to bottom. This is perhaps the only division where a rather unskilled fighter like Huck could win a title. If he was fighting at light heavyweight or heavyweight, he would have a lot of problems finding a place for himself. However, Huck has lucked out when the WBA elevated Wladimir Klitschko to the Super WBA heavyweight champion and this opened up the WBA regular heavyweight title for Povetkin and former WBA champ Ruslan Chagaev to fight over.

Povetkin won the fight and now he’s the champ but more like a paper champion than a legitimate one. Povetkin is flawed enough to where even a fighter like Huck could possibly beat him. However, Huck is going to have to come up with some skills in this fight if he wants to take the belt away from Povetkin. Huck won’t get the job done rushing Povetkin in wild predictable assaults.

Povtkin will be ready for those attacks and will likely have the size and the chin to turn Huck away. This is a much bigger guy than the weak guys that Huck has been fighting his entire career. Povetkin has skills and can do a lot of stuff in the ring. Huck is going to have to use his jab and look to box Povetkin if he wants to win this fight, because he won’t be knocking Povetkin out. That’s not going to happen.
