Image: Broner destroys PerezBy Dan Ambrose: In what was supposed to have been a competitive fight turned out to be a huge mismatch, as WBO super featherweight champion Adrien Broner (23-0, 19 KO’s) made easy work of WBO #1 contender Eloy Perez (23-1-2, 7 KO’s), handing him his first loss of his still young career on Saturday night at the Scottrade Center, in Saint Louis, Missouri.

Broner, 22, flattened the 25-year-old Perez with a big right hand that put Perez on the canvas face first. Perez was far too hurt to make it to his feet and continue fight, and the bout was halted by referee Gino Hernando at 2:24 of the round.

Broner looked very impressive in the fight, nailing Perez with left hooks and right hands in a Mayweather-esque manner. Broner picked Perez off as he would attempt to get in punching range, and he seemed to realize after a while that he couldn’t match up with Broner. The size differences between the two fighters was pretty significant, as Broner looked a lot bigger than Perez, almost like welterweight facing a lightweight.

Perhaps after this performance, Broner will start to get more credit from boxing fans and writers as being one of the best fighters – if not the best – in the super featherweight division. There are no real challengers out there for him aside from him WBA super featherweight champion Takashi Uchiyama that can give Broner an interesting fight. Broner would likely knock Uchiyama out as well. Broner perhaps needs to move up to lightweight to go after the top fighters at that weight such as Ricky Burns, Brandon Rios, Yuriorkis Gamboa, Miguel Vazquez, Antonio DeMarco, Robert Guerrero, Jorge Linares, Kevin Mitchell, and Juan Manuel Marquez.
