Image: Andre Ward turns 28 today!By Scott Gilfoid: WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward (25-0, 13 KO’s) turns 28-years-old today, and is only now entering his prime years as arguably the best fighter in the super middleweight division. Ward has a lot more ahead of him before he’s through and said he recently that he wants to add the IBF and WBO super middleweight titles to his collection before he eventually moves up to the light heavyweight division at some point in future. Ward is a major talent with skills that are almost unmatched in the division at this time.

There really isn’t much to stop Ward from accomplishing that goal other than the IBF and WBO champs choosing to avoid him. That won’t be a problem with the IBF belt holder Lucian Bute, because he wants to very much take on Ward. However, it could be next to impossible for Ward to ever get a fight against the winner of the April 14th fight between Mikkel Kessler and Robert Stieglitz because there’s already been two years of milking going on with the current champ Stieglitz. He might lose to Kessler, who already got spanked by Ward three years ago in 2009, and has been making excuses ever since. I don’t see Kessler ever trying to avenge that loss because Ward has got his number big time.

The only fighters in the super middleweight division that can really give Ward problems right now are the Dirrell brothers, Andre and Anthony. Those two are easily the most talented duo in the division and will likely move in to snatch up the WBO and IBF titles unless Ward can get to them first. There are a couple of other decent fighters in the division such as Adonis Stevenson and Edwin Rodriguez, but that’s pretty much it. The other guys – Carl Froch, James DeGale, Sakio Bika, and George Groves – are too flawed and limited in one or two areas for them to ever be a threat to Ward. He’s in a different league compared to the guys below him for the most part.
