Schaefer predicts Pacquiao to fight Bradley

Image: Schaefer predicts Pacquiao to fight BradleyBy Chris Williams: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is fed up with Bob Arum of Top Rank making useless predictions about what his Golden Boy Promotion fighters will be fighting next. For example, Arum recently picked Floyd Mayweather Jr. to fight Robert Guerrero, which Schaefer has already pointed out won’t be happening.

So, Schaefer decided to make his predictions about Arum’s next moves with his fighters Manny Pacquiao, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., and Miguel Cotto.

Schaefer told RingTV “What Bob [Arum] wants to do is have Pacquiao fight Timothy Bradley, and he wants Juan Manuel Marquez to fight [Lamont] Peterson, and he wants Cotto to fight Chavez Jr…That’s why he put Bradley on the Pacquiao card. It’s just that what’s going to happen; watch and see. Let’s just say I have sources that he wants to have Pacquiao fight Bradley.”

That makes sense for Arum to put Bradley in with Pacquiao because he made Bradley the co-main event in his first fight with Top Rank on Pacquiao’s last fight last November when the Filipino star fought Juan Manuel Marquez and won a controversial 12 round decision. Bradley fought 40-year-old Joel Casamayor in a painful to watch mismatch.

It was a bad fight and a crazy match-up to begin with. Arum seemed to have misjudged Casamayor in what he had left in the tank because that fight didn’t help Bradley at all in winning new fans, not that it would stop Arum from matching Bradley against Pacquiao anyway.

If Arum was willing to match a fighter like Joshua Clottey against Pacquiao, then he’d have no problems putting a non-star like Bradley with him as well. A Bradley-Pacquiao fight won’t be huge because Bradley is still a little known fighter among casual boxing fans. He needs at least two years of fighting on Pacquiao undercards against high quality opposition for him to become well known. Even then, I don’t that he’d be well liked due to his lack of hand speed and power, as well as his habit of diving forward with his head. He’s not pleasing to watch and Arum may have misjudged fan interest in seeing Bradley face Pacquiao.

Bradley isn’t seen as a courageous fighter among many boxing fans for him turning down fights with Amir Khan. Instead of facing Khan, Bradley sat around and did little until being matched against 40-year-old Casmayor. A fight between Bradley and Pacquiao would be a mismatch because Bradley can’t punch and he fights in close. He doesn’t have the sound defensive skills or the counter punching ability of someone like Juan Manuel Marquez, so he’s not going to be able to make Pacquiao pay every time he lands his shots.

If Arum picks Bradley, I think that will be a big mistake. Cotto and Marquez are much better choices. Even Lamont Peterson would arguably be a better choice because he doesn’t dive in with his head and try to wrestle like Bradley. It could be a really boring fight if Pacquiao and Bradley fight.
