Rigondeaux and Ramos battle it out on January 20th

By Chris Williams: In what could be a fight between the two best fighters in the super bantamweight division by far, undefeated WBA World super bantamweight champion Rico Ramos (20-0, 11 KO’s) will be defending his title against interim WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (8-0, 6 KO’s) in a fight on January 20th at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Also on the card will be Brandon Gonzales vs. Caleb Truax, Matthew Villanueva vs. Michael Ruiz Jr. and Guy Robb vs. TBA.

Rigondeaux, 31, is arguably the best fighter in the division right now. Some would say new comer Nonito Donaire should be the guy that carries that claim. However, Donaire was exposed in his last fight against Omar Narvaez as being a pretty limited fighter when faced with someone who knows how to defend a left hook.

Ramos has got a lot of talent and he’s going to really push the southpaw Rigondeaux in this fight, but at the end of the day he won’t have enough what it takes to push Rigondeaux to get a win. The Cuban Rigondaux, a former two time Olympic gold medal winner for Cuba, has looked sensational in his first eight fights as a pro. Normally fighters that turn pro wait until they’ve reached the 25 to 30 fight range before they fight for a fight if they have the talent to. But Rigondaux is a seven-time Cuban national champion and fought close to 400 times as an amateur in his former home country of Cuba, where there is no professional ranks.

Ramos, 24, has the youth in this fight, but he’s going to be lucky if he can make it to the 6th round in this fight because Rigondeaux has so many ways of beating his opponents. Ramos may do all right if he can get Rigondaux into the later rounds, as he’s only fought 12 rounds once and that was against Ricardo Cordoba in November 2010. But it’s not going to be easy for Ramos to make it that far. He’s never faced anyone nearly good as Rigondeax and this is going to be a rude awakening for him in this fight.
