Donaire’s trainer hasn’t studied Vazquez Jr? Maybe he doesn’t need to

Image: Donaire's trainer hasn't studied Vazquez Jr? Maybe he doesn't need toBy Chris Williams: Nonito Donaire (27-1, 18 KO’s) is facing a guy that was recently knocked out in Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (21-1-1, 18 KO’s) in a fight for the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight title on February 4th at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. Donaire’s trainer Robert Garcia reportedly hasn’t even bothered to sit down and watch tape on Vazquez Jr. So what does that tell you?

It tells me one of two things: Either Garcia is lazy and not up to putting the effort into doing the hard work to study Vazquez Jr. or he saw his recent KO loss to Jorge Arce like I did and recognizes that Vazquez is a good hand-picked opponent for Donaire to pick up an easy title against.

I think it’s more of the latter. Vazquez looked awful against a small and old Arce in 12th round TKO last May. If Arce can KO Vazquez, then it kind of goes without saying that Donaire will be able to do it as well because he’s like four inches taller and has a much longer reach.

What’s really telling isn’t this match-up, it’s the fighters that Donarie’s promoter isn’t matching him against at super bantamweight; namely Guillermo Rigondeauz, Rico Ramos and Toshiaki Nishioka. Those guys would be big problems for Donaire.

Garcia said this to examiner.com “I’ve never really followed much of his career [Vazquez Jr.]. I’ve seen his last fight against Arce [actually that wasn’t Vazquez’s last fight. His last fight was against a journeyman named Roberto Carlos Leyva], but before that I’ve never really followed him.”

Rest assured, Garcia doesn’t need to study him because this isn’t a threat to Donaire. Believe me, if Donaire was fighting Rigongeaux or Ramos, Garcia would be staying up night and day trying to figure out a way to keep Donaire from getting knocked out or badly beaten.
