Khan needs to be steered away from fighters with an inside game

Image: Khan needs to be steered away from fighters with an inside gameBy Allen Fox: Golden Boy Promotions needs to make some adjustments when matching their hoped to be star former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan in future fights.

While I do think it’s a good idea for them to appeal to the IBF and WBA to try and get Khan’s two titles back on appeal, I don’t think it’s a smart move for Khan to be put back in with Lamont Peterson after suffering a 12 round split decision loss to him on December 10th.

Khan was exposed to have not even the working elements of an inside game, and he was forced to foul repeatedly in order to keep Peterson off of him. In a rematch it will be much worse for Khan, because Peterson had him figured out in the last eight rounds of the fight and in a rematch it will be even worse for Khan.

He’s not going to have learned how to fight on the inside by the time they fight again – if they ever do – and Khan may not be allowed to foul like he did in the first fight without losing additional points.

The referees have been tipped off to Khan’s fouling and his lack of an inside game, and they’re not likely going to let him foul at will in the future. This is why I think it’s a really dumb idea for Golden Boy to try and put Khan back in with Peterson or to be matched up with any more inside fighters from this point.

Golden Boy has done a good job of keeping Khan away from sluggers after his brittle chin was exposed in a 1st round knockout loss in 2008 by Breidis Prescott. In all those years since then, Khan has had to fight only one fighter with power and that Marcos Maidana.

Khan almost lost that fight, but got through it by a combination of shoving, pulling down on Maidana’s neck, running and the constant interruptions of the action by referee Joe Cortez. Khan hasn’t been in with a slugger since the Maidana fight, and I think it’ll probably stay that way.

But I think Khan needs to be steered away from inside fighters as well after seeing clueless he looked against Peterson. Keeping Khan away from sluggers and fighters that have ability to fight on the inside obviously limits the guys Khan can be potentially matched against, but that’s how things go. If you want to keep Khan winning, you’ve got to steer him away from certain fighters and put him in situations where he can win.
