David Haye just sitting and waiting for Vitali fight

Image: David Haye just sitting and waiting for Vitali fightBy William Mackay: It’s now been five months since former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (25-2, 23 KO’s) last fought and was schooled by IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko in a one-sided 12 round decision loss last July.

Haye still has nothing planned for his next fight and is merely sitting on his duff and waiting for a big payday fight against Wladimir’s older brother WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko in 2012.

Vitali attempted to negotiate a fight with the 31-year-old Haye recently, but due to the numerous sticking points during the negotiations, Vitali decided to move on and take a stay busy fight against 2nd tier heavyweight Derek Chisora (15-2, 9 KO’s) in February.

In the meantime, Haye is just sitting idle, not fighting anyone and not planning on fighting. All Haye wants is the big payday money fight against Vitali and/or a rematch with Wladimir. Haye has no intention of fighting anyone else and trying to stay sharp and learn from his mistakes he made in the Wladimir loss.

It’s almost a given that Haye will lose to Vitali and likely by knockout if they do arrange a fight next year. With Haye not fighting, how can he have any reasonable chance of success against the iron-chinned Vitali?

Even when Haye was staying busy and fighting on a regular basis, he barely beat the lumbering Nikolay Valuev by a 12 round majority decision two years ago in 2009.

Vitali is perhaps a tad faster than Valuev in hand speed and foot movement, but he has a lot more power and throws a lot more punches. To those fans who feel that Haye will have a chance against Vitali because of his lack of athleticism, they need to sit down and re-watch how badly Haye struggled to beat an even slower fighter in Valuev.

But what gets me is that Haye is just sitting and waiting for the Vitali fight to be plopped in his lap like a tidbit given to a fat cat. He’s not working at his trade and just sitting like someone waiting for a monthly check. He seems wrong for Haye to be rewarded with a fight of this magnitude based on the fact that he lost his last fight by a one-sided decision and has been reluctant to continue fighting other opposition.

He just wants the Klitschko brothers and will then retire or say he’s going to retire. I think it’s bad for boxing to have a guy given title shots when he’s just sitting idle like that.
