Chisora exposes Helenius
By John F. McKenna (McJack): Prior to Saturday night Roberst Heleniua (17-0, 11 KO’s), dubbed “The Nordic Nightmare” by his fans in Finland was thought to be one of the fighters who would someday give the Klitschko’s a real run for the money. But as frequently happens to prospects in any weight division, something went terribly awry on Saturday night.
British heavyweight hopeful Dereck Chisora (15-2, 9 KO’s) who was exposed himself a few months ago by the 6’9” Tyson Fury (17-0, 12 KO’s), came to fight when he entered the ring against Helenius on Saturday night. In one of the worst miscarriages of justice ever carried out in the ring Helenius was given a “gift” decision over Chisora.
Chisora out-hustled Helenius and was far the busier of the two. Two of the ringside judges scored the fight 115 – 113 in Helenius favor, while the third judge score it 115- 113 for Chisora.
American trainer Freddie Roach, who worked the fight as a commentator called the decision “just terrible”.
It was reported in the Mail online that British promoter Frank Warren was calling for an immediate rematch. Warren referred to the decision as “One of the worst I’ve seen in the sport.” Warren said he was going to lobby the European Boxing Union (EBU) in an effort to force a rematch.
Warren was quoted saying:
“Helenius was supposed to be the next big thing and the man to challenge the Klitschko’s, but Dereck totally exposed him and I’m being generous in giving him four winning rounds in the fight.
“I’ll be speaking to the EBU as well as the other organizations about an immediate rematch which is the only course of redress for the injustice done to Dereck. Dereck really proved he is one of the top heavyweights in the world and we’ll have Helenius’ number when they meet again.”
It was evident during the match that Chisora mapped out a blueprint on how to successfully cope with the height and reach advantage of the 6’6” inch “Nordic Nightmare”. Most troubling for Helenius was the fact that he appeared gassed long before the final bell.
It was clear by Helenius performance against Chisora that he has a long way to go before he can entertain the thought of tangling with either of the Klitschko’s.
