Image: Was Saul Alvarez rushed to the title?By Gerardo Granados: He is a talented fighter, but has plenty of room to improve in many of his boxing skills, not the less he has one thing that can not be bought in a store, it is punching power and this kid sure has a hammer on his fist. His longtime trainer Eddie Reynoso has build Canelo as an unorthodox traditional Mexican style fighter, because Alvarez is not the brawler who takes three or four punches to be able to land one of his own.

He even tries to imitate Floyd boxing style but to achieve it he would need to replace his trainer by Mayweather´s uncle Jeff Mayweather who could be able to fix many of the flaws on the defense and counter attack of Alvarez. But first the kid needs to engage against worthy opponents that can help him develop his boxing skills and gain experience, because the ones that have been picked for him can give him good earnings but won’t help him to improve.

Saul Alvarez is just twenty one years old but at that age great fighters already faced top opposition. Canelo´s fans are not blind and soon will realize that the kid is been spoon fed avoiding dangerous contenders. The way he is been matched might not be Alvarez fault but he has been matched so carefully as if he still is been developing his over all boxing skills and needed to wait one or two more years before he reaches his peak. Is it that Canelo is not ready to face a big challenge yet?

With all due respect for the former IBF welterweight champion Kermit Cintron, years back he was a good fighter but in his last three fights he has showed not to be in the same level that he was in the past. Is that the main reason why he was picked to fight against Saul Alvarez?

Jose “Pipino” Cuevas was eighteen years old when he became the WBA World welterweight champion; Edwin “Chapo” Rosario was twenty years old when he conquered the WBC lightweight title; Wilfred Benitez aka “El Radar” and “Bible of Boxing” was only seventeen and a half years old when he was crowned as the WBA World light welterweight champion; it is not a coincidence that all of them end up inducted in to the hall of fame. At age nineteen years old Jorge “Travieso” Arce was the WBO light flyweight champion and he did not avoided a good fight, you can ask hall of fame member Michael Carbajal if Arce was cherry picking his opposition.

If Saul Alvarez was not ready to defend a world title against a top contender, then why his promoters and manager did not waited until the kid reached his peak before throwing him to the wolfs? The reason is obvious, the kid has a big charisma and draws good ratings. But, if he was rushed to the title then it will difficult his development as a boxer.

There is only one way to know if Saul Alvarez is ready or was prematurely rushed to the title, and it is to defend his belt against top contenders as Vanes Martirosyan, Alfredo Angulo, Erislandy Lara or triple division champion Miguel Angel Cotto; because if he is not ready then the harm might be hard to fix. Do you believe he was rushed to the title?
