By Dan Ambrose: WBC Diamond middleweight champion Sergio Martinez is hoping he’ll get a fight against WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in 2012 after the World Boxing Council mandated that Chavez Jr. has to fight Martinez next year by March 2012 at the latest.

Martinez, the WBC Emerius middleweight champion, doubts that Chavez Jr. will take the fight with Martinez even then. Martinez is now waiting for Chavez Jr. to vacate the his WBC strap, so that he can fight for it against one of the top contenders, who will likely be Marco Antonio Rubio, the current #1 ranked contender.

Chavez Jr. faces Peter Manfredo Jr. in November in Chavez’s first defense of the WBC title that he captured last June against paper champion Sebastian Zbik.

Chavez’s promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank, badly wants to match Chavez Jr. against Saul Alvarez in what would be a big money fight that would take place in Mexico. However, the difficulties in trying to find a suitable catchweight for the two fighters to meet at, among other things, will likely make the fight undo-able before 2012.

The good news for Chavez Jr. is that he really doesn’t need to be weighed down with the WBC title in order to put together a big money fight against Alvarez. The title is almost meaningless. What means much more than the WBC title is Chavez’s name. Being the son of the famous Julio Cesar Chavez ensures that Chavez Jr. will attract large amounts of boxing fans to see him fight whether he has the WBC title in his possession or not.

Arum probably isn’t about to mess up the money train by actually putting Chavez Jr. in with someone that can really fight like Martinez. That would be a disaster for Chavez Jr. because he would surely be knocked out and would lose his unbeaten record. There are a lot of boxing fans out there who are very impressed with Chavez’s 43-0 record and see it as an indication that he has talent like his father.
