Image: Eloy Perez a possibility to fight Adrien Broner if Burns ducks the fightBy Scott Gilfoid: It’s looking as if WBO super featherweight champion Ricky Burns will duck his title defense against the talented undefeated Adrien Broner (21-0, 17 KO’s) on November 26th in Cincinnati, and instead will vacate his belt to move up in weight.

For a fighter that should consider himself lucky to have captured the WBO title, I think Burns is insane if he vacates his title and moves up a division. This will probably be the last title Burns ever wins, because the lightweight division is loaded with talent and you’ve got to have power to capture a title at that weight, even a paper title.

Giving up the belt without a fight is pretty sad. I’m hoping Burns decides to take the Broner fight instead of going out with a whimper by giving up his title. But in the meantime, number #4 rated WBO contender Eloy Perez (22-0, 6 KO’s) is said to be interested in fighting Broner, but not on November 26th and not in Cincinnati.

In other words, it doesn’t sound like Perez and his people are all that excited about facing Broner and I can see why. Perez is a good defent fighter, but he won’t stand a chance against blazing fast puncher like Broner. Perez has zero power, not much in the way of hand speed and is more of a defensive specialist. His whole game is to peck away on the outside with jabs and weak shots while trying not to get hit.

He won’t be any problem for Broner. I think Burns is a lot better fighter than Perez will ever be. But if Burns ducks out, Broner has got to fight someone for his vacant title. It might as well be a guy with an inflated record with no losses like Perez. It will look good for the casual boxing fans and Broner will get more credit for the win.
