Boxing for what it is today

By Ray Napoleoni: My thoughts about the sport that I love, boxing has been around since the gladiator days. And in the sport today it’s more entertaining with money involved. Every boxer fights because one day they hope in becoming champions.

In my era of boxing they have a lot of belts in too many weight classes, which would be more exciting if they only had two (WBA, WBC) and that would make boxing more competitive. I think that’s a mistake that they made today in the sport of boxing. But I do love the sport and it is very entertaining. Especially with the specials they have on HBO, the face off’s with Max Kellerman, to the 24/7 series leading up to the day of the major fight, and to the press conference tours.

There is a lot of tough fighters that have the heart and desire to never quit. Fighters like Andre Ward, Klitscho’s, Cunninghams, Gamboa, Nonoto Donaire, and the oldest champion alive right now that’s still putting a dent in boxing the executioner Bernard Hopkins. There is still a lot of great fighters, and there’s always going to be 1 or 2 great fighters that will stand out, and those are the Manny Pacquiaos and the Floyd Mayweathers.

I believe that the genetics’ to becoming a good fighter is first and foremost heart, if you have no heart you have no chance. Courage, determination, offense, defense, rhythm, eye coordination, good lateral movement, head movement, timing, accuracy, and the one most important thing every boxer should have is a decent jab, and to never lose you composure when it gets tough. But behind every great fighter is a great trainer, like Roger Mayweather, Freddie Roach, Emmanuel Stewart, and Nacho Beristain.

And there’s one man today that have all these attributes the one that just wants a fair shake, Floyd Mayweather Jr. Hate him or love him, he is our Ali of boxing today, or even better.
