But the one opponent Amir would ultimately like to face is Floyd Mayweather Jr. (41-0, 25 KO’s). Khan and trainer Freddie Roach both believe that Amir will be the best pound for pound (P4P) fighter in the world within a two year timetable they have laid out for him.

Thus far Roach is well pleased with Khan’s progress. Amir’s close friend and stable mate Manny Pacquiao is off the table as an opponent. Roach trains both Khan and Pacquiao and says he would never let them fight each other. They are too much like sons to him.

To achieve his ultimate goal of best P4P fighter in the world that leaves Amir Khan with the other top fighter in the world, Floyd Mayweather Jr. Khan has that burning desire to fight the best fighters in the world. He knows he must beat the best out there to be considered the best.

At 24 years of age Khan has an impressive resume. He hold both the WBA and IBF light welterweight titles and has been on record stating that he wants to have one more fight at 140 pounds and then move up to welterweight. He has also expressed a desire to face Mayweather who at 34 years old would be expected to start slowing down soon.

Floyd for his part has sent mixed signals with regard to fighting Amir Khan. He has said recently that he likes fighting in England and would enjoy fighting at Wembley Stadium. To most boxing fans that would seem to indicate a desire by Mayweather to face Amir Khan, but not so fast. Deciphering comments made by the Mayweather camp to the press is like attempting to read tea leaves. Everyone is left confused by the process. A few days after he made the comments that seemed to suggest a willingness by Mayweather to face Khan, Floyd said that he did not think that Khan was a big enough draw. Right back to ground zero, where things always seem to go with Floyd when he discusses future fights. The process is maddening.

Khan believes that when the time comes to make a match between him and Mayweather, Floyd will duck him just like he has ducked Pacquiao. Amir believes that Mayweather will not fight anyone who he believes has a chance of beating him, thus losing his 41 and 0 record.

Amir Khan has shown a marked improvement over the past few months. It would be wise for Mayweather to take Khan on in the near future before his skills begin to decline as they ultimately do in all fighters.
