What is Timothy Bradley trying to prove?

By John F. McKenna (McJack): Timothy Bradley (27-0, 11 KO’s) holds both the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and World Boxing Council (WBC) light welterweight titles and although he is undefeated and ranked #7 Pound for Pound fighter in the Yahoo Sports poll, he is still a relative unknown. Only hardcore boxing fans know who Timothy Bradley is.

Last January Bradley won a unanimous decision over Devon Alexander. Devon was unable to continue after being cut in the 10th round by an accidental head butt from Bradley. The fight then went to the score cards and Bradley was the clear winner.

The fight between Bradley and Alexander was not a good fight to watch. In fact it was a real yawner and although Bradley won the fight he did nothing that would want to make fans pay money to see him again. HBO did not win any points either for hosting the match. HBO gave the fight a big build up and to say that it was a letdown would be an understatement.

Coming off of that win Bradley was in line to fight rising superstar Amir Khan (26-1, 18 KO’s) in July. Instead Bradley bailed out of that fight reasoning that he would be able to pull down a Mega Bucks fight against Manny Pacquiao or possibly even Floyd Mayweather. Khan was left holding the bag so to speak and wound up fighting Zab Judah instead of Bradley.

Timothy Bradley’s career is now in limbo with his former promoters bringing suit against him. Bradley in attempting to explain why he does not want to fight Khan at the present time had the following to say in an interview with Ring TV:

“The timing is not right now. I don’t feel that we would generate what I feel we would both deserve and what the promoters deserve.”

The problem with Bradley’s reasoning is that he does not have a huge fan base and is not a big draw anywhere, even in his home town. He simply does not have the type of style that would make boxing fans want to pay to see him fight. That is the cold hard reality.

Manny Pacquiao himself has yet to voice any interest in fighting Bradley and in fact has not mentioned him as possible future opponent.

The question Bradley needs to ask himself is why would Manny Pacquiao risk fighting an opponent who is unknown, has no fan base and is a dangerous opponent to boot? The danger in fighting Bradley is not that Pacuqiao could not defeat him, he most certainly would defeat Bradley. The danger would be Bradley’s third weapon, his shaved head. Timothy is notorious for his accidental head butts that have the proven potential to cause a fight ending cut at any time. If Bradley is ahead when that happens, as in the Alexander fight, he wins. Why would Manny Pacquiao want to risk that?
