Warren: Haye shouldn’t wait until October to retire; he should do it now

By Sean McDaniel: Promoter Frank Warren thinks that former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye shouldn’t wait until October 13th for him to retire and instead should do it now. Warren doesn’t see a direction that Haye could go in for his career if he were to continue to fight.

In his column at thesun.co.uk, Warren said “Haye has maintained he would retire on Oc-toe-ber 13, when he turns 31. But he should bring this forward. His heavyweight career ended last Saturday and there is nowhere left for him to go.”

To be sure, Haye was badly exposed by IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko and made to look bad in a way that has soured boxing fans’ opinion of Haye. It would be very hard for Haye to come back from this unless he were to make some major changes to his game and then fight only good opposition and not old heavyweights like he had been doing.

It would very difficult for Haye to successfully pull it off with making changes to his game, but for him to take on and beat quality heavyweights instead of just old guys, that’s hard to see. Haye would most likely continue to face older heavyweights and would end up wasting his time. When you look as bad as Haye did against Wladimir, you have to do something really drastic if you want to come back from it.

Warren said he wasn’t happy with the way that Haye was flopping on the canvas and then looking at the referee, as if Haye were hoping he’d disqualify Wladimir or take off points. Warren thinks Haye would have been knocked out had he fought aggressively instead of passively in his safety first style.
