Vitali thinks Adamek will be a tough fight, but few people agree with him

By William Mackay: WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (42-2, 39 KO’s) doesn’t really understand why boxing fans see his September 10th fight against former two division world champion Tomasz Adamek (44-1, 28 KO’s) as a hopeless mismatch much worse than Wladimir Klitschko’s defeat of David Haye last weekend. Vitali has been saying that Adamek will be a tough fight, as if Vitali is trying to hype his own fight by saying how good Adamek is.

It’s unfortunate that Vitali needs to do this, but it tells you what boxing fans think of it. This isn’t Haye vs. Wladimir where a lot of fans were giving Haye a great chance of knocking Wladimir out. Adamek used to be a big puncher at light heavyweight and cruiserweight. Alas, his power is pretty gone in moving up in weight to the heavyweight division.

Adamek was unable to carry the power with him and now he’s basically a weak punching hit and run fighter in the mold of Chris Byrd. Actually, I think a prime Byrd would easily take care of Adamek. That’s how much I think of Adamek. The Polish heavyweight has been very carefully matched since he moved up to the heavyweight division. Adamek has fought a lot of older heavyweights that are kind of on their last legs like Andrew Golota, Michael Grant, Kevin McBride and Vinny Maddalone. The only younger heavyweights Adamek faced were Jason Estrada and Chris Arreola, and he didn’t look good either of them.

This is mismatch and no amount of pumping Adamek up by Vitali is going to turn this fight into a fight that the world sees as a competitive and thrilling fight. It’s like Vitali’s fight against Alberto Sosnowski, but with more of chase involved. Vitali will have to really chase down Adamek because he’s going to be running and likely stinking up the joint to try and survive to the finish. It’s going to be ugly. It’s never interesting to watch a champion have to chase down a hit and run fighter like Adamek, but that’s how it’s going to be. Vitali shouldn’t even try to talk up Adamek because it’s a waste of time. The boxing world won’t buy it and he’ll just end up looking silly. Vitali is better off calling a spade a spade.
