Froch sees DeGale-Groves as a 50-50 fight; may fight the winner

By William Mackay: WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch sees this Saturday’s clash between British super middleweight champion James DeGale (10-0, 8 KO’s) and challenger George Groves (12-0, 10 KO’s) as a 50-50 fight where he can’t pick out the guy that will emerge as the winner in this fight. Groves and DeGale are two of the best upcoming fighters in the UK right now.

Thus far, DeGale has accomplished a bit more than Groves with his 2008 Olympic Gold Medal for Britain. Groves has captured the Commonwealth title, but he had problems when he was put in with a decent fighter in Kenny Anderson recently and was dropped. He did come back and score a stoppage win, but Groves took a lot of head shots in the fight and looked average.

Froch sees DeGale as the better fighter in terms of technical skills but he’s unsure whether he can pull out the win or not. Speaking with Sky Sports News, Froch said “It’s a 50-50 fight for me. DeGale as the far superior technical ability, he’s looked impressive in the fights he’s had. We know George Groves has plenty of bottle, because Kenny Anderson put him in some serious deep water and he manged to pull through to a victory…Dependent on results at the weekend, it could map something out for my future homecoming.”

There is a huge difference between Anderson and DeGale. Froch seems to have things twisted in thinking that just because Groves was able to get up off the deck against a slow and hittable Anderson that he would be able to do the same thing against DeGale. More than likely, Groves will get dominated and if he hits the deck, he’ll stay on the deck. If not, the referee will step in to save him from getting seriously hurt. DeGale is good enough to give Froch trouble, and Groves is a couple levels below both of them. It is interesting the thought of Froch facing DeGale in the future. That would be a good fight if Froch isn’t beaten in the Super Six tourney. If he does get beat, then DeGale shouldn’t waste his time fighting him. DeGale needs to fight winners, not losers.
