By Dan Ambrose: If you look at some of the recent interviews by Erik Morales (51-6, 35 KO’s), he seems to have a ton of excuses for his poor performances and losses in the past. Morales’ number one excuse seems to be that he had to take off too much weight for some of his especially bad performances.
However, now that he’s fighting at light welterweight against Marcos Maidana (29-2, 27 KO’s) this Saturday night, I have wonder what Morales’ excuses will be for this fight. He can’t possibly fall back on the weight excuse because he’s fighting three divisions above his old weight.
If he can’t make 140 without feeling drained, then Morales really needs to retire because he simply doesn’t have the size, speed or power to compete at welterweight. This is basically it for the 34-year-old former three division world champion. He either wins here or he might as well pack it in. Morales doesn’t have the size to move up to welterweight, and he honestly looks way too slow and weak to compete against the best light welterweights.
Morales has struggled badly against the three 2nd tier light welterweights he’s fought since making his comeback last year, and now that he’s fighting a top tier guy in Maidana, Morales is going to have to come up with some tricks for him to win this fight. I don’t think Morales has chance in this fight. This is beyond boxing ability. To win this fight Morales would need youth, size and power, and sadly he’s missing all three of those assets. Hopefully, Morales doesn’t have another weight excuse when he gets taken apart on Saturday.
