Ariza looking to make Pacquiao more muscular for Mosley bout

By Chris Williams: According to Abs-cbn news, Alex Ariza, the strength and conditioning coach for Manny Pacquiao, is looking to add more muscle bulk for the Filipino’s Ma 7th bout against fading 39-year-old Shane Mosley in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ariza reportedly wants to make Pacquiao’s muscles more dense, which he feels will act as a cushion for the shots from Mosley.

It sounds nice but it could be a big a waste of time by making Pacquiao slower and more likely to tire out in this fight. Pacquiao might be better off just being wiry and using speed to beat up the aging Mosley. I think Ariza might be over-thinking this one. Pacquiao only has to throw a lot of punches and Mosley will likely be gasping for breath after the 2nd round.

We’ll then see Pacquiao ease up on him and look to the referee to stop the slaughter. But adding a bunch of muscles to Pacquiao’s frame is such a waste of time in my view. He’ll just end up getting tired and then we’ll have two tired fighters to watch on May 7th.

Can you imagine Pacquiao and Mosley both too tired to throw punches. It would be just awful to watch and when you factor in all the money you’re going to dish out to watch this on pay-per-view, you’re probably not going to be a happy camper.

If I’m Pacquiao’s trainer, I’m going to have him focus on being thin and fast rather than putting on useless muscles on Pacquiao’s tiny frame. It’s like putting a rocket on a skateboard. You don’t want to have Pacquiao put on muscles that will only hinter him in a fight that is basically won just by walking out into the ring. This is a mismatch as long as Pacquiao doesn’t bulk up too much and lock up.
