Vitali could step in and face Haye if Wladimir’s still too injured to fight

Image: Vitali could step in and face Haye if Wladimir’s still too injured to fightBy Jim Dower: The mega fight between IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko and WBA champ David Haye will be a 50-50 deal in terms of purse split with no options or rematches, says Klitschko manager Bernd Boente, according to Dan Rafael at ESPN. If Haye beats Wladimir, Haye will then be free to move on.

Haye will likely then be willing to face WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko due to big money that will be available to Haye if he decides to take that fight. The Wladimir-Haye fight is 99% done but still the contracts haven’t yet been signed, says Boente. However, he feels confident that the contract will be signed.

It’s unclear whether HBO or Showtime will show the fight in the United States. One of them will, but it remains to be seen whether HBO will get the fight. They haven’t been showing the Klitschko’s fights for a while now, preferring instead to ignore their mismatches and put on smaller fighters with bigger fan bases in the U.S. The fight will take place in June or July. Wladimir had to cancel his April 30th fight with Dereck Chisora because of an abdominal injury that Wladimir has that’s still not completely healed.

Boente says that the injury is legitimate. The contract for Chisora vs. Wladimir had a part where it stated that the fight could be cancelled in the event of an injury. It’s just a coincidence that the injury allows Wladimir to take a fight that will bring in much more money than the Chisora fight.

The real kicker here is that if Wladimir’s abdominal injury still isn’t healed by the fight time in June or July, Vitali will then step in and replace Wladimir for the Haye fight. That’s probably something that Haye is hoping won’t happen because Vitali is a much tougher fight for Haye compared to Wladimir. Boente says the contracts states that Wladimir or Vitali can take the fight with Haye.

Vitali has a fight against unbeaten number #1 WBC challenger Odlanier Solis on March 19th. Vitali will have to win that fight in order to have a chance to step in and replace Wladimir in the Haye bout. Vitali will likely easily beat Solis, so that’s probably not going to be a serious obstacle getting in the way of Vitali stepping in for Wladimir.

Having to fight Vitali instead of Wladimir would be a nightmare for Haye, because his whole game is built around stunning his opponents with a single shot. If he can’t hurt Vitali with his pot shots, Haye could find himself taking a Shannon Briggs-like beating. It would truly be ugly if Haye couldn’t take Vitali out with one of his pot shots. Boente says that Haye is okay with fighting Vitali. This is the same thing as with the Tomasz Adamek fight contract. Wladimir is supposed to get that fight, but if he’s injured or beaten ahead of time, Vitali will get the call.
