Image: Mosley's trainer sees Pacquiao as the better match-up compared to MayweatherBy Dave Lahr: There’s no doubt that 39-year-old Shane Mosley struggled last year when put in with the highly skilled Floyd Mayweather Jr. Mosley ended up losing by a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision and getting a boxing lesson in the process. Now Mosley is facing Manny Pacquiao on May 7th in what, at least on paper, would seem to be a huge mismatch.

However, Mosley’s highly respected trainer Nazim Richardson sees Pacquiao as a much better match-up for his fighter Mosley compared to Mayweather, saying in an article at Abs-CBN – News “I said before the Mayweather, the better match up is Pacquiao and Shane. I think it’s a better match up with Pacquiao, because they’re both warriors and they happen to have great personalities.”

I don’t know about the part of having great personalities, but I do agree with the part about this being a better match-up for Mosley. The reason for this is because Pacquiao is more wide open defensively compared to Mayweather and comes to slug a lot more. Unless Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach has Pacquiao under strict orders to stay on the outside and box Mosley, this should be a fight where Mosley can find Pacquiao’s head with his shots whenever he wants.

The only question is whether Mosley has the stamina to stick around long enough to batter Pacquiao, bust him up, make him bleed and then take advantage of Pacquiao as he struggles to see through the blood pouring into his eyes. Once Pacquiao is cut up, he becomes a different fighter. When Pacquiao is cut, you have a chance to beat him because he becomes tentative and fusses with his cut a lot. Mosley has got to take advantage of all the scar tissue around Pacquiao’s eyes by landing a lot of head shots and hope to get him bleeding. Mosley can then take over the fight while Pacquiao dabs at his cuts constantly to try and clear his eyes and check on the status of the cut.
