Andre Ward vs. Arthur Abraham: Great Fight or Total Farce

By Mark Hepplestall: The super six tournament has been described as many things, firstly billed as the tournament that will save boxing, however in the eyes of many boxing only needs saving in the USA, but ultimately this tournament has became a total joke.

The two fights this round include Carl Froch Vs Glen Johnson and Andre Ward Vs Arthur Abraham with the winner of both fights going toe to toe in Las Vegas for a nice big trophy and surely a one way ticket to the pound for pound list.

On one side we have the American Olympic champion, Andre Ward and on the other side is the brawler Arthur Abraham. It seems weird saying it in the semi finals but this is the hardest fight Andre Ward has participated in, there is always a danger when Abraham is in the ring. Both fighters have fought different levels of opposition with Andre Ward convincingly beating Mikkel Kessler even if the refereeing was slightly atrocious, while Abraham knocked Jermaine Taylor’s head clear off his shoulders. Next Abraham was in a match that can only be described as surreal with Andre Dirrel, the match will forever be remembered for its controversy, still to this day people are unsure whether Dirrel was hurt by Abraham’s grazing swipe or he just acted to get the win. Ward meanwhile was fighting Allen Green in a fight that Ward totally dominated but just couldn’t find the knockout. Lastly in the best fight of the tournament by far Arthur Abraham was totally out punched, out boxed and out fought by the tournament dark horse Carl Froch. Ward fought a close in reality but wide on the judges’ scorecards fight with Sakio Bika. It’s clear that Abraham has had the harder fights, Taylor being undisputed Middleweight champion at one point, Andre Dirrel is tailor made to fight one dimensional fighters such as Abraham and Froch is just another level to Abraham.

So what chance does Arthur Abraham have? Can a one dimensional fighter beat an Olympic champion? Well it really matters how big the one dimension is and with Ward yet to have his chin truly tested it is a dangerous match. The world expects Ward to fight on the outside all night against Abraham to a unanimous decision, hopefully to inject some excitement Abraham will turn up to win and come out swinging. All eyes will be on the referee and judges, the home fighters have always found exceptional good fortune in this tournament. If it’s not enough for Ward to fight all his fights in his home country surely having an American referee and American judges won’t be necessary.

In my opinion I don’t see much chance of Abraham shocking the world, if the fight is anything like Wards previous three bouts and even if Abraham scores a number of lucky knockdowns I see the judges giving it to Ward. If Ward wanted to gain more fans surely going to Germany to fight a still totally overmatched Abraham would have been a good idea, however I doubt ShowTime are willing to take that kind of chance.
