Vera defeats Mora: How does Pacquiao look now for having picked Mosley?

By Chris Williams: In what has got to be a bit of disappointing news for the upcoming May 7th Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley fight, former WBC light middleweight champion Sergio Mora (22-2-2, 6 KO’s) was soundly beaten on Friday night by journeyman Bryan Vera (18-5, 11 KO’s) by a 10 round split decision at the Convention Center, in Fort Worth, Texas.

This loss for Mora has meaning because Mosley’s last fight last year was against Mora and Mosley had to settle for a gift 12 round draw against Mora. Few people who saw that fight felt that Mosley deserved the draw, however. Many boxing fans, this writer included, saw Mora winning that fight. Mosley looked absolutely shot against Mora, and was beaten to the punch all night long. The fact that Mosley couldn’t even beat Mora tells you all you need to know about the Pacquiao-Mosley fight. They might as well call this fight an exhibition fight or a partial old timer’s fight on the part of Mosley, because it’s not going to be a fight unless Pacquiao decides to carry Mosley for 12 rounds so that boxing fans are pissed for having dumped huge cash on the pay-per-view fight.

This wasn’t the first time that Mosley had looked horrible, as his fight before that against Floyd Mayweather Jr., last year in May, saw the exact same thing from Mosley. He just looked shot and old. Mora’s spanking last night by Vera pretty much said all you need to say about Mosley. It just makes it look even more ridiculous that the 39-year-old Mosley was picked out for Pacquiao instead of a fighter that was still cogent.

Mora was getting hit with right hands and left hooks all night long by Vera. Mora looked okay when he was running around the ring, but as soon as he would stop, Vera would be on top of him, nailing him with huge shots to the head and body. It wasn’t even close. Vera was by far the superior fighter in there with Mora. There wasn’t any struggle at all. Vera looked good against Mora because he was throwing punches and had power. In contrast, Mosley looked sloppy, old and was unable to pull the trigger against Mora.
