Fury wants Audley Harrison bout – Boxing News

By Sean McDaniel: Unbeaten British heavyweight prospect Tyson Fury (13-0 9 KO’s) is once again looking to fight an older heavyweight to get some attention and a scalp to add to his resume. Fury failed at getting, 22, failed at getting 42-year-old out of shape Francois Botha in the ring recently after the British Board of Control nixed that idea by refusing to sanction the Fury-Botha fight.

Now, Fury is calling out 39-year-old former 2000 Olympic super heavyweight Gold medallist Audley Harrison (27-5, 20, KO’s) for a fight. The timing for this couldn’t have come at a worst time, as Harrison recently was destroyed by WBA heavyweight champion David Haye last November in a fight that Harrison only threw one punch – a jab – in.

There was briefly a question as to whether or not Harrison would have all or a portion of his purse without for lack of effort. However, he was able to keep all his money but it still didn’t cause him to win any fans.

Fury had this to say about a fight with Harrison in thesun.co.uk: “It makes sense, it’s a good fight. He’s just fought in a world title fight and is an Olympic gold medallist, while I’m a brash youngster with a big mouth who has been accused of not being able to back it up. So we’d see if he’s made of anything and we’d also see whether or not I’m a phoney. I’d fight Harrison, I’d love to. But it just shows you how much of a farce the Haye-Harrison fight was if people are thinking of me, with just 13 fights under my belt, taking on Harrison. Who am I fighting next? You tell me. I’ve had about ten opponents who have all pulled out.”

Fury would really help himself if he stopped calling out older fighters and started facing some young fringe contenders. At 6’9” 250, Fury doesn’t need to scout out older fighters to get wins. He’s good enough already to pick off some of the top fighters and learn some things from them. He doesn’t need to go after an older guy like Harrison, who would likely teach him nothing by just freezing and not throwing punches. That’s a waste of time for Fury.
