Cleverly-Braehmer: Nathan wants Tavoris Cloud as soon as possible

By Sean McDaniel If WBO light heavyweight interim champion Nathan Cleverly (23-0, 10 KO’s) wins his next fight against the World Boxing Organization light heavyweight champion Juergen Braehmer (36-2, 29 KO’s) on April 2nd, Cleverly wants to go after undefeated IBF light heavyweight champion Tavoris Cloud (22-0, 18 KO’s) immediately after.

That’s a tall order for Cleverly, because Cloud is a much better fighter than the guys that Cleverly has been facing up until now. Cleverly may wish that he have opted to milk the WBO title if he can get by the 32-year-old Braehmer at the Wembley Arena, in London, England. That fight in itself figures to be a tough one for Cleverly unless he can grow some boxing skills before April 2nd.

In an article at the dailymail.co.uk, the 23-year-old Cleverly said “As soon as I win this fight, I will be straight on the case of my promoter to fight Tavoris Cloud, the IBF champion. I want to clean up and be undisputed champion and I reckon I can do that this year, provided I get Braehmer out of the way. He’s a proper world champion but I know that whatever Braehmer gives me I’m going to walk through it and punish him. If I can beat Braehmer, it will open doors for me to the likes of Cloud, the WBC champion Jean Pascal and Bernard Hopkins. I would love to fight in the States sooner rather than later.”

Frankly, I think Cloud wouldn’t stand a chance against Cloud, Pascal and Hopkins, but you can’t blame him for wanting to at least try and fight them.

It sounds like Cleverly is going to try and plod his way though Braehmer’s shots on April 2nd. That may be the smartest thing for Cleverly to do, because he took a lot of punishment in his fights with Karo Murat and Nadjib Mohammedi last year. Cleverly won the fights, but took a lot of shots to the head.
