Image: Bute vs. Magee: Lucian needs to step it up against better oppositionBy Sean McDaniel: IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute (27-0, 22 KO’s) is danger of leaving not much of a legacy during his four-year reign as International Boxing Federation champion. He’s faced thus far five weak opponents during his time as the IBF belt holder and hasn’t mixed in any dangerous fighters like Andre Ward, Andre Dirrell, Carl Froch or Mikkel Kessler during all those years. On March 19th, Bute will take on yet another challenger that shouldn’t figure to be much of a threat to him when he takes on 35-year-old Brian Magee (34-3-1, 24 KO’s) at the Bell Centre, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

The victory is basically in the bag for Bute, unless he gets tapped on the chin like he did in his first fight against Librado Andrade. For the record, I had Bute losing that fight by a 12th round knockout, because Bute appeared to get a long count by the Canadian referee working that fight. Never the less, Bute did beat Andrade easily in the rematch, stopping him in the 4th round.

I wasn’t impressed with Andrade as an opponent because he had already been handled by Kessler with easy in a one-sided 12 round decision. But it was an eye opener that Andrade was able to put Bute down for what appeared to be 12th knockout in 2008.

So Magee has a small chance if he can land one on the button on Bute and hope that he topples over. However, it’s not a good sign that the 35-year-old Magee has spent his career fighting for British and EBU titles rather than competing at the world stage. It’s nice that Magee is finally getting his chance against top tier opposition at this late stage in his career, but the guy is too inexperienced and long in the tooth to compete against a fighter like Bute. Ideally, Magee should have been fighting and beating top tier super middleweights a long time ago, but I don’t see the fights on his resume. As such, I see as another fodder opponent for Bute to pad his record with. What a waste.
