Bradley asks Khan: Can you stop me for 12 rounds?

By Sean McDaniel: WBC/WBO light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley (27-0, 11 KO’s) is really looking forward to his Summer unification bout with WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (24-1, 17 KO’s), provided that Khan doesn’t have any skip ups in his next fight on April 16th against unbeaten Paul McCloskey (22-0, 12 KO’s).

Bradley was impressed with what he saw of Khan in his recent win over Marcos Maidana last December, saying this in an article at sportsillustrated.cnn.com:

“He’s ready. Amir let his hands go against Maidana. If you let your hands go against a puncher, you are going to let your hands go against me. And I’m going to let my hands go, too. I actually think Amir is quicker than I am. I’ve seen him live. He’s got a little Manny Pacquiao in him. But can he out-will me? Does he have what it takes? I’m going to be there all night.”

Bradley is coming off a less than impressive performance against Devon Alexander (21-1, 13 Ko’s) in a fight which Bradley won by a 10th round technical decision after Alexander seemed to lose his will to fight after a head clash in the 10th. Alexander winced in pain, needing time to recover.

When it appeared that he wasn’t going to be able to get over the pain, the referee stepped in and halted the fight. Bradley, and a lot of other people, thinks Alexander quit. But Bradley didn’t look all that great in the fight, especially with his lack of power. This is going to be a big problem for him if he gets a fight with Khan this summer.

Khan is looking like not only the faster fighter but the stronger puncher as well. Khan will also be the taller fighter of the two by a considerable margin. The only thing that Bradley will have going for him is his ability to apply constant pressure.

That may have been good enough in the past when he was fighting stationary fighters or ones that came straight at him, but Khan is a mover now that he’s trained by Freddie Roach. He’s not going to just stand there for Bradley to pound on or apply pressure to fight on the inside.

Bradley continues, “You know I come in shape. I’m going to fight fire with fire. Freddie Roach knows the game plan. I’m coming to get you. Can you stop me for 12 rounds?”

We’ll soon see unless Bradley decides to sign with Bob Arum of Top Rank. In that case, we may have to wait a long time for a Khan-Bradley fight.
