Arum says Chavez Jr. vs. Zbik will be in either Mexico or the Middle East

By Eric Thomas: Unbeaten middleweight contender Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) could be one of the lucky beneficiaries of having his next fight in May against WBC middleweight champion Sebastian Zbik (30-0, 10 KO’s) shown on CBS. Bob Arum, the promoter for Chavez Jr., recently signed a deal with CBS/Showtime to put the May 7th bout between Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley on CBS/Showtime. There is now talk of Arum putting the Chavez-Zbik fight on CBS as well.

And what’s even stranger, is that the fight could end up taking place in the Middle East, according to Steve Kim at maxboxing.com. The Chavez-Zbik fight will take place in either Mexico or the Middle East, because of the costs involved with the fight, says Arum. Besides the shock value of Arum possibly putting the Chavez Jr. vs. Zbik fight in the middle east, it’s kind of bizarre that Arum would pick out Chavez Jr. as one of his first fighters to be shown on CBS.

It’s not that Chavez Jr. isn’t a good fighter, because he certainly is, but rather he just came off of an unimpressive performance against Billy Lyell last weekend where Chavez Jr. looked flabby, slow and weak. Surely, Arum could find another one of his fighters to showcase on CBS rather than Chavez, right? Well, it seems that the Chavez vs. Zbik fight got really good ratings from boxing fans who wanted to get a glimpse of Chavez Jr. It could be that because of his famous father Julio Cesar Chavez, Chavez Jr. has a huge fan base already built in that Arum will be able to tap by putting his next fight against Zbik on CBS.
