Will Haye choose to fight Holyfield now?

By William Mackay: Evander Holyfield looked nothing like his old self on Saturday night in fighting to a 3rd round no decision to Sherman Williams after the fight was stopped due to a head butt in this pay-per-view bout in West Virgina. Holyfield got staggered in the 3rd and was getting lit up in the round before the fight was stopped after the round due to the cut. It wasn’t a bad cut, but it looked like Holyfield had enough of Williams.

WBA heavyweight champion David Haye had to have seen or heard of the Holyfield non-performance. Since Haye seems to have been focusing on facing old and shot fighters since he moved up to the heavyweight division in 2008, you have to wonder whether Haye will decide to try and give Holyfield the title opportunity that Holyfield has been talking about for ages since he failed in his last try against former WBA heavyweight champion Nikolay Valuev in 2008. Holyfield, as bad as he looked tonight, would be a perfect opponent for Haye to fight. Haye could barely throw a punch after the 2nd round.

It looked like he had a shoulder and arm full of dead fast twitch nerve fiber because he just couldn’t pull the trigger tonight against the 38-year-old Williams. And we’re not talking about a good heavyweight. Williams is very, very average, and not fast or powerful. Yet Williams able to tee off and rock Holyfield. He was literally hitting Holyfield at will in the 3rd round, and this had nothing to do with Holyfield’s cut eye. It looked more like a case of Williams finding success because of how badly deteriorated Holyfield has become in the past year.
