Pacquiao-Mosley may still end up doing poorly even with the move to CBS/Showtime

By Chris Williams: Since the news broke that Manny Pacquiao’s fights will be now be shown on CBS/Showtime rather than HBO, boxing fans of Pacquiao have been gloating about it, as if this is something to be happy about because Pacquiao may be able to make a little more money from some of the mismatches he’s been taking part in. The thought here is that Pacquiao’s next fight against the shot 39-year-old Shane Mosley will naturally bring in more money, perhaps a lot of it, through more pay-per-view sales due to the previews that CBS will doing for the Pacquiao-Mosley fight on their CBS channel.

In theory, it may bring in more money but I’m really not so sure about that. I’ve spoken to a number of casual boxing fans about this fight and without exception, all of them have said that they won’t be bothering to order the Pacquiao-Mosley fight. They say they like Pacquiao a lot, but they don’t want to pay to see him beat up on an old fighter like Mosley.

I was kind of stunned because I figured that most casual boxing fans were clueless that Mosley is about to turn 40 and pretty much totally shot. But they vaguely knew that he was an old fighter because he had fought Oscar De La Hoya years ago. This tells me that if boxing fans don’t like seeing Pacquiao beat up old fighter like Mosley, it may not matter what cable company shows this mismatch. boxing fans will stay away, save their $50 to $60 and spend it on nice dinner instead.
